"...toothed whales produce short, ultrasonic clicks of high directionality and source level to probe their environment acoustically..." (2007, Madsen) Immersed in our own bubble of loneliness, we take refuge in our digital lives, closing our eyes to the multitude of experiences and emotions that surround us during our daily lives. Acknowledging the existence of the people around us is the highest form of civilization that can be expected of human beings. The greatness of Life lies in the nuances of the reality that surrounds us. A reality that is fuzzy, intricate and extremely complex in our eyes. The only way we can know it is to create those interactions that this reality, on a subatomic level, create it and keep it alive. Some species of whales are capable through their teeth of emitting very loud sounds that are believed to be used to locate other whales even at a distance of many, many miles (called echolocation). The immensity of the ocean, its infinite vastness and its absolute three-dimensionality put these divine creatures in touch with their loneliness and compels them to use sound to contact other fellow creatures, which is in my opinion absolutely poetic. We also have a voice with which to contact other people, but we forget to use it to learn about our fellow human beings. The artists has an even more powerful tool than just the voice to locate their fellow human beings: Their art. They also forget to use them to impact other people and to change their lives. Echolocation can indeed be performed by humans through their creativity, too. In this piece of improvisational piano music I play along with a group of sperm whales performing echolocation. My genesis is a tribute to this majestic ocean creature and its ability to enchant man throughout its history. A story that has spanned the centuries to me, who decided to leave the water, land and air, becoming an intergalactic whale.
