"Party (Like It's 1999)" was created by Merv xx Gotti's hip-hop/R&B boyband project, Samurai Champs, in collaboration with Canadian rapper, Jeah. The single is an ode to the '90s and the golden era of hip-hop, as well as to their Southeast Asian heritage and the communities who raised them. Upon release, the single was playlisted on JASMINE, Spotify's official editorial playlist highlighting emerging Asian artists. Having toured internationally, Samurai Champs have performed at festivals such as SXSW (Austin, TX), NXNE (Toronto, ON), Music Matters Live (Singapore), Reeperbahn (Hamburg, GE), The Great Escape (Brighton, UK), Tallinn Music Week (Tallinn, Estonia), Upstream Music Fest (Seattle, WA), Sound City (Liverpool, UK), BreakOut West (Edmonton, AB), and many more. Leading up to their JUNOfest performance, Samurai Champs were featured in CBC Music’s "Samurai Champs: Meet the Wild, New Hip-Hop Group Revolutionizing Saskatchewan Music." This was the first installment in CBC Music’s “Beyond the 6,” an online editorial series highlighting Canada’s most notable hip-hop artists creating communities around Canada. Samurai Champs have also won numerous awards and honors, including multiple nominations for Western Canadian Music Awards’ Hip Hop & R&B Artist of the Year, TD Bank’s Creative Entrepreneur Incubator, and winning Hip-Hop Artist of the Year in SaskMusic’s Saskatchewan Music Awards.
