Hi I’m Cameron and this will be my first release in over 6 years. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to sound.xzy for giving me the opportunity to release a song. About 8 years ago I bought a grand piano from Paul Kostabi in upstate NY. Even though he gave me a deal I emptied my bank account doing so and could barley afford to move it back to Brooklyn. For the next two years I had nothing but that 6’8” conservatorium grand piano, which only fit in the freight elevator by a couple millimeters, a bed and a white shag carpet rug. That piano really altered my life. I think I played it for about 5 hours a day. Eventually I felt like I wasn’t doing the thing justice so craigslisted some piano lessons. My teacher knew I couldn’t read music so I would send him songs I wanted him to learn and teach me every week. Either that or he’d help me re-voice the backward songs I was writing at the time. Eventually he taught me how to split a chord across octaves, sounds so simple but it really opened my mind to melody and harmony. I started moving chromatically down scales with this newly found technique and let my ears go where they wanted to, if that doesn’t sound too pretentious. That’s where this song was born. It’s been rattling around on my hard drive since then until this year where I had a conversation which free’d me, in way, to let this song happen. Airport Beers is about being in flux. The consciousness of transit or a change, between places or somewhere more metaphysical, creates instability which can be embraced or feared. It depends on whether you’re intrigued by uncertainty or not. Beginnings and endings have always seemed recurring or cyclical to me. Everything in between is never the same. It’s as much about what you do with your time in flux as it is about beer.
